What does the legacy of the Dutch slavery past mean for people in the here and now? The pop-up exhibition Legacies of Dutch Slavery: Nine Stories showcases this through nine personal histories from different parts of the world.

The trade in enslaved people was a global system. Nine online stories are available to explore alongside this exhibition.

The Founders

Ira Kip and Ayra Kip are twin sisters and dynamic creative forces known for their global impact in the arts. Born and raised in Amsterdam with Caribbean roots in Aruba, Curaçao and Suriname, they bring a rich cultural heritage to their multidisciplinary work.

Ira is a storyteller, theater director, writer, creative producer, and educator. She studied at the Theater School of Amsterdam and earned her MFA in Directing Theater from The New School for Drama in New York.

Ayra is a master fundraiser, writer and cultural curator who knows how to translate passionate ideas into innovation creative activations and programs. She is a graduate in journalism from the University of Arts London and she holds a post doctorate degree in Philanthropy from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.
